It’s all business at the Franchise Association

It's-all-business-at-the-Franchise-Association

The Association is supporting the Franchise Advisory Centre and its ‘Introduction to Franchising’ seminar on Monday, March 19 (9am-5pm) at the Waipuna Hotel in Mt Wellington. The seminar will cover critical basics that every franchisor employee, potential franchisee, new franchisor and business advisor should know.

Franchisors can help their team reach maximum job effectiveness sooner by attending this essential training investment that helps build core knowledge and understanding of issues, practices and trends that affect franchising performance.

This seminar is also suitable for prospective franchisees, as well as business owners thinking about franchising their businesses, and provides a critical understanding of key franchising concepts important for long-term business success.

It will be conducted by Franchise Advisory Centre director, Jason Gehrke who has more than 20 years experience at franchisee, franchisor and advisor level. He is a past member of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) Franchise Consultative Panel, and has been a director of the Franchise Council of Australia since 2008. He teaches franchising at undergraduate and postgraduate level at Griffith University, and publishes Franchise News & Events, an email news service for the franchise sector. Jason conducts franchise training throughout Australia and is regularly published in franchising and business media.

Learning objectives:

  • A working knowledge to assess your own suitability to franchising as a business option;
  • Sufficient knowledge to undertake further self-directed research or formal study into your franchise area of interest;
  • Ability to critically assess franchise offerings;
  • Ability to recognise the requirement for and appropriateness of professional advice in relation to franchise offers;
  • Wider understanding of franchising to enhance job integration and performance (for franchisor personnel).

In other NZ Franchise Association news, the board has reinforced the commitment to upgrade the Association's involvement in franchise training this year. Executive director Graham Billings says, “We are also looking carefully at the possibility of providing on-line training for potential franchisees and will have more information over the next couple of months.

Billings says they have already had a meeting with the new Minister for Small Business, Hon John Banks and discussed the Association’s proposals for the small business growth scheme with him. They are also to meet the Minister of Commerce, Hon Chris Tremain later in March at his invitation and with representatives of the Maori Leadership Group also in March.

“We were able to deflect a proposal to bring franchise agreements within the ambit of the new Consumer Law Reform Bill late last year. This has now had its first reading and is with the select committee. We will be carefully monitoring its progress to ensure the proposal does not get reinserted at a late stage.”

The Association’s annual conference 2012 is to be held the weekend of 12-15 July at the Copthorne Hotel, Bay of Islands. Billings reports, “We have already confirmed a number of  top speakers and those of you who attended the Westpac Franchise Awards dinner in November, will remember our MC, Geoff Bryan, who will be with us for the weekend.

Expressions of interest for this year's awards will be out before conference and there will be a special workshop by the Business Excellence Foundation on making the most of your entry.”
